Carved Spoon

2018 - “Club Challenge – Make a Spoon” ~

Yellow Cedar (?) 12½"l. x 2¾"w. x 2¼"h.

Carved – burned textures & lines – painted – gilded. Acrylic paints & inks, metallic & iridescent paints, and Celtic Bronze gilders paste. My first (and only to date) totally carved piece – quite a few hours in this piece but I enjoyed making it.
Beautifully done Tom! I love the texture and color. How did you get the nice round colored objects to be so smooth? Did the paint make a smooth surface?

@brian horais
Thanks, Brian. Those little domes are friction burned with a cup bur/cup cutter in a rotary tool. These burs were originally used to round over wires in jewelry pieces. Lots of smoke! Some are colored with metallic colors, some with iridescent paints. The back side is different - but I still can't figure out how to post additional photos in the 'comments' section.

I love the coloring on the cup burr domes! Did you have to sand the burn marks off to get the nice coloring Tom? Great spoon.

@Russ Braun
Thank you, Russ. No, I don't sand off any burn marks - in fact the dark surface accentuates the colors of iridescent and interference paints. The metallic colors are thick enough to just cover over any burn marks. Depending on the texture involved I usually use a bristle disc or defuzzing disc in my rotary tool to remove any loose charring. In this case I also burned in the stippling so it was easy to defuzz the whole surface.
