Birch crotch bark edge bowl. The bowl is once turned green with three piths showing 5" diameter X 2" high X > 1/8 wall thickness and finished with 3 coats of spray lacquer. Note: The blotchy darker colors are due to normal oxidation that occurs when birch is milled or in this case once turned and if it were twice turned it would likely be turned away on the finish turning.

Thank you for that explanation on the blotches that birch gets. It resolves a puzzle I've had for a long time.

The reason I know that is from doing rough turned birch pieces that get the same oxidized darkening but it usually is removed during the second finishing turning.
