Spalted maple hollow form (box?) with lid. Finished with Odie's Oil. Some repair with Starbond Black in the heaviest spalting. About 7.5 inches tall by about 8 inches wide. Constructive criticism appreciated.
Rick, I think you made a real nice semi-open form. Aesthetics is so incredibly personal, I'm reluctant to comment, but since you asked...I don't think the lid works. You managed to match the lid curve to that of the bottom very well, which is challenging to do, but...the lid seems heavier by comparison, and in my view, detracts from the overall result. If you like it, that's all that matters and you should ignore my foolish words.
You know, I think you put into words what I was feeling about this. I just wasn't happy with the outcome but couldn't figure out why. I have not made many lids - I'm actually pretty new to the whole thing (about nine months or so). I think I'll try an inset lid and see what happens. Thank you! Rick
Rick, I'm glad you took Dean's comments so well. I'm still low on the learning curve; however my suggestion is don't do anything with this piece. Put it on a shelf. Try something different with your next pieces. Side by side, you will see shapes and balance that please you.
Good thought, Mike. I may still try a different lid just to see what I get. I keep many old turnings in my office and look at them regularly. Sometimes I cringe a little, sometimes I smile.
