Big Leaf Maple Burl Bowl

This is a top view of a 16" diameter bowl turned from a Big Leaf Maple Burl Cap I scarfed at the symposium in Providence in 2002...for five bucks. The bowl features a textured ring to differentiate it from the rest of the surface. The texturing was done with the piece still mounted on the lathe with an electric engraver supported by the tool rest and with the workpiece "indexed" by hand for each stroke. Finish is BLO and Target Coatings USL wb acrylic lacquer. Please see the other entry for details on the turning's base.
Jim, Very beautiful! Great accomplishment. Philip
