Black & White Ebony with Maple finial

I purchased several rather unusual wood blanks from a retired turner. This rare piece of 6” x 6” x 2.5” black and white ebony was in the (20+ year old) collection. When I got it home I found the price tag on it- $82!

The resulting piece is 5.5” x 5.5” (3” maple finial).

I’ve learned that this wood comes from South Asia and it’s hard to get big pieces because it cracks easily when drying. This piece must have been dried quite slowly because it had no cracks. (It was sealed in wax)

I’ll be surprised if I ever get another piece of black &white ebony.
