Note: Thanks to @Ed Davidson, I'm now in the process of transitioning to using an acrylic paint for permanent inventory numbers. This one is an early example, and as you can see, the numbers look a little "faded" because the Beall buffing was a little too excessive.

I have now concluded that avoiding the EEE compound over the numbers is the best method. The WD step is used very sparingly over the numbers, and the Carnauba wax is applied as normal.
