Elm hollow form - milk paint and Beall buff.

The roughed out hollow form sat in the chuck under plastic wrap for a week while we had house guests and then I went in pursuit of a recently fallen cherry tree that needed immediate attention. By the time I got back to it a layer of mold had developed. The wall was already pretty thin so in a few spots it went all the way through the vessel, hence, instead of a natural finish, I turned to highly buffed milk paint. The finished vessel is 6” diameter by 4 1/2” tall.
Great color and with a hint of grain.
Thanks so much Darryn! I hoped that the grain would show through. Originally the milk paint was quite opaque. I sanded back until the grain started to show. The Beall buff really made the difference.
Great piece. What finish did you put on the milk paint?
its just the Beall buff Norm. White diamond then carnauba. The milk paint is a coat of green and then a couple of coats of blue, sanded back.

Just out of interest Lou, did you get any transfer of the milk paint onto your buffing wheels?
Not at all Will. I let the paint dry overnight and it was pretty hard. Fine dust on me as I sanded, but no paint on the cloth wheels.
Edited to add: I just went out to look at the wheels, and I was wrong. There is a trace of blue on the middle (white diamond) wheel. None on the carnauba wax wheel.

That's good to hear the paint is pretty inert when dry. A bit of color on the wheel won't hurt anything. I have never used Beall as a finish, so I must try it. I will stash this new knowledge away in the vault ☺️
