Cherry Burl from a locally sourced tree I first turned and then did heavy carving and pyro with some texturing and airbrush work. Ammonite and trilobite added. Finished with 80:20 danish oil to mineral spirits to keep the natural wood look. Size is approximately 22”x 15”.
Cool! I did a nautilus shell relief carving, in cherry, a few years ago. Following the Golden Ratio nature shows us again how amazing it is. I like the other little fossil creature sneaking in as well. All appropriately balanced. Well done! What is your carving tool(s) of choice?

Besides the turning gouges and scraper used for a short amount of time I like to use a couple power carvers like the foredom with more torque to do the heavy carving roughing if you will. Along with some kutzall fine, medium and course carbide burrs. Once if get down to almost how I like it I switch to my low torque high speed micromotor (currently saeshin) and use a combo of smaller 1/8th shank fine burrs and then diamond burrs for final shaping sanding. Thanks for asking and apologies for being so long winded.
