Great Basin Poplar Platter

11”ø x 1.5”h

Ordered some gorgeous figured GBP from Gary DeHeer earlier this year, but wasn’t sure what I’d make with it. Decided to turn my first platter in three years 😅 Kept the shape simple so as not to distract from the amazing figure and chatoyance.

Never heard of GBR, so I did some limited research. It apparently is not a specific species of tree but a catch-all for nicely figured wood similar to poplar. This would include several species of Cottonwood, which are in the poplar family. One species with the common name Narrow Leafed Cottonwood is actually in the willow family.

The term definitely gets broadly applied. I’ve usually heard the GBP name used for black cottonwood (Populus balsamifera) that grows in and around the Wasatch Valley. Other regional names for this variety are Mormon poplar and Utah poplar.
