Great Basin Poplar Platter

11”ø x 1.5”h

Ordered some gorgeous figured GBP from Gary DeHeer earlier this year, but wasn’t sure what I’d make with it. Decided to turn my first platter in three years 😅 Kept the shape simple so as not to distract from the amazing figure and chatoyance.
Great looking wood for sure! Makes investing in a coring tool worth it…the pros make it look easy. I’m headed to Maui in a few weeks; I’m pretty sure some wood is going to follow me home, lol!! This site will be revisited!

One of the garbage woods here in Utah. However if you can find a nice figured piece like you have, it can be amazing.

Obviously, a great piece of wood, BUT I love that shape. Could you please share a picture of the bottom? This is inspiring me to try to make a platter, but I never know how to the bottom.
This piece is with a new owner and I didn’t take any pics of the bottom before I boxed it up. Generally speaking, the bottom silhouette follows the interior. The bottom of the bowl is about 3/16” thicker than the upper walls to give the piece sturdiness and stability. The base is 4” wide, slightly concave.

That is useful, I'll give it a whirl, thank you!
