Walnut Form Basket Illusion

This is my first time doing a hollow form illusion piece and the first time I've used walnut. Inspired by Curt Fuller's walnut illusion pieces, had to give it a try. About 6" diameter and 2.75" tall. I tend to leave illusion pieces without a topcoat, but I am running some test samples and won't rule out using a finish yet on this one.
A beautiful piece with convincing illusion. I cant imagine what the count would be for the divisions on each bead. Lot's of patience and consistency on display. That is a very light colored walnut. Well done. Curt's example is evident.

Thanks David.
At a diameter of 6" and an average of 32 burn lines per inch, there are over 600 on the middle bead. This little form was a pleasure to do vs the last one that was a bowl at 11" diameter. Add inside and out side and it does get tedious. Will be exploring more hollow form shapes in the future.

This is really nice Tim! I like the subtlety. It does look light for walnut. It looks lovely with no finish. Wonder if it will darken up over time?

LOVE THIS SO MUCH! 🙌 How was it to use the beading tool on walnut? And, did you freehand the burn lines? I haven't found an indexing wheel that goes that high...Anyway AWESOME work the shape of the vessel is gorgeous and the design is perfect for it.

Thanks Will. Most of the wood from this tree is lighter colored for whatever reason. I tried some samples with Krylon Matte 1311, and it darkens it enough that it muddles the details. This one will stay unfinished. Walnut actually will lighten up in color with enough age.

Thanks Maggie. I was surprised how well the beading worked. Very little tearout vs some other woods I've done, but also cut very slowly with the tool, and keep it sharpened.

The burning is all freehand. I don't use any indexing on the lathe. The design is laid out with dividers once it's off the lathe. I burn the design, color it, then come back and fill in the blank spaces with burning. At 32-34 burn lines per inch, I think it would be near impossible to try and use indexing.
