I really love this.
I am self/video taught. All the teachers say to line it up so the bowl is proportional. But I don't think if you're doing a live edge bowl it's going to be a utility bowl so it shouldn't be in line with the exception of some salad bowls I suppose. This is a drastic example of not lining it up. I love how off kilter it is. It's wonderful.
Hello Charlie,
I am not an expert at drying with the microwave.
I do chart weight and moisture, start at a minute in the oven, when taking it out I feel the temperature, if it is un comfortable to hold, lower the time, if cool, raise the time. Also The moisture meter, used as soon as it comes out will let you a lot, at first the level will raise with the heating as the moisture boils out of the interior. Once it is totally cool, check moisture and weight and repeat.
It usually takes two days to dry, maybe 20+ times in the oven, making sure it is totally cooled before the next cycle.
I set a walnut bowl blank on fire internally once pushing the time in the oven, and shortening the cooling time.
I also think that drying until it does not loose any more weight is over drying, 5 to 6% dried wood is too dry here in KY, but you can still make the piece lighter in weight.
