Carved from a single piece of highly figured boxelder. I was going for an effect of a polished outer rind with the appearance of it eroding away to reveal an inside structure of grooves like a shell or a skeleton. The bronze sculptor Jack Eagan provided the inspiration. I used black and red dyes on the outer polished rind, and a coat of Osmo Polyx followed by Beall buffing finished the outer rind. I wanted a lot of contrast between the inner and outer sections, so the inside was not sanded to as high of a polish, and the only finish was some walnut oil, with no buffing. 13" H by 10" W by 4.5" D
