Snowball's Urn

This pet urn, turned in collaboration with my brother @Ethan Hoff is for our Grandma's beloved cat Snowball. We each worked on different parts of the urn. Ethan designed and cut the chevron feature ring and I shaped and turned the main body. This piece took a lot of planning and precision work. The body is hard Maple with a Walnut, Cherry and hard Maple feature ring. We hollowed it in two separate sections and glued it back together with the feature ring. The shape is a classic tapered urn form with a chamfered, domed lid. See next post….
Nice work. I tried something similar recently with a body of live oak and a simple ring of morado, and the end grain to side grain glue joint just wouldn't hold, probably due to the gluing challenge of the morado. It fell apart on the lathe and I glued it all back together... and then it just exploded on the lathe and went in the burn pile.
Looks like you had a much better experience.
