Ken's finials

I turned these for a friend. They are 12" tall and 5 1/4" around. There are 1,152 flutes in them. I emptied 5 garbage cans full of waste from this project. Ken is going to hang them upside down from beams in his new cabin.

Nice turnings John, I must admit, at first I thought it was Chess pieces until I read the description.

very nice, at first i thought they must all be pawns

Great, John. And looks like a couple more on the back shelf. The only downside to a chess set would be carving the knights. Care to reveal how you made all these identical? Duplicator? Templates? or whatever?

Joe

Joe I just measured carefully and then tried to duplicate the cuts. The pieces aren't exact just really close. These will hand upside down from beams and be at least 4 feet apart so no one will be able to tell the difference. When I have to be exact I use a template and sneak up on the design. I don't like duplicators because they leave a bad cut and require a lot of sanding.

I agree with your assessment of scraping duplicators, John. Here's an optical contraption I found about a year and a half ago: http://www.delorie.com/wood/tips/parallax-jig.html
Haven't had a need for it yet, but it's on my "bucket list."

Joe I have used that method and it works quite well. These didn't need to be perfect because they will be on the ceiling and about 5 feet apart.
