My late wife loved hearts and it sadly took a decade and help from Michael Anderson for me to figure out how to make them. I stumbled onto a padauk board at Woodcraft last summer and it came home with me to be this year's homemade Christmas presents. I adore the deep red color padauk develops over time. There are also a couple made from bleeding heart and one of a mystery wood, and there will be a few more of cherry and redwood before the production run is over. Starting from a thin board adds to the work, especially when it turns out to have a delaminating crack in it. As a gift, "Are 3 enough? Are 6 too many?" (If you remember that ad, you're old, Duke) Large ones are 3", no finish, just buffed.
