No, it is natural--not burned, painted or stained--just very old wood that was actually unrecognizable even after I finished turning it. I dunked it a couple of times in Russ Fairfield's submersible finish, and let it dry, and then you could tell it was walnut, primarily from the back. The front, particularly given the angle from which the phot is taken has a lot of dark (almost black) wood, interspersed with normal walnut color. Plus the picture is a bit darker than it should be. If I have time, I'll see if I can fix it and repost.
Final finish was urethane oil/mineral spirits, and Bealle.
