The trick is to reverse hollow the piece from the bottom, which requires a tenon on both ends to finish the piece. After hollowing from the bottom you then plug the opening by sizing and glueing back the bottom tenon piece that you parted off earlier (much like fitting a box lid).

I'm working on my first tall hollow form (vase). I'm getting close now, just glued the bace on. Thanks for the tip before. I wondered if you have or know of any tutorials on this process? There are many things to consider as you go. My vase is spalted maple and not nearly as elegant a shape as yours but it's a start. I think I have to work up to that long thin neck. I also have not even thought about dyes yet in my learning. I still come back to this piece and get lost in those colors! Wow!

Sorry I haven't been on the forum in a while. If you like it may be faster if we connect through the email link on my website: https://www.woodchomper.com/ and I will try my best to help you out. I do have a video on my website for coloring but don't have any tutorials for the long neck hollow forms yet. I do plan on doing a long neck hollow form demo at the Florida Woodturning Symposium in February next year.
I’ve already looked over your website and all the resources you have there. Very beautiful work and some good information. I look forward to you doing a full demo and posting it sometime. I have gotten better at this technique. You can see some of the results in my media here. Still not gotten into the dyes.
