The World I Know

The World I Know
"The World I Know" (Escaping With Nature series)

Turned from boxelder and utilizing both bark and wood, this globe is 9" in diameter.

The color is a blend of lightfast dyes on the wood inspiring one person to say, "You have water and wood."

By utilizing the bark, the piece not only has "land" but the inner layer of bark (phloem) has distinctive lines lending to the look of water currents and waves hitting the shore.

Thanks to coach Steve Loar, for a suggestion on the design of the base.

I used a Lazy Susan turntable so that the globe can be rotated. Check out my Facebook

is it hollow?
No. It has two natural voids, but otherwise is solid.

Gerald, thank you! I can. It takes just the right piece of wood for sure . But I have another one in process right now. And I have done several others in a similar vein, such as my balloon pieces (posted in my album) and a sphere on which I did just a blue line around the bark simulating a shoreline and left the rest of the wood clear.
