A WoodTurners Holiday Poem

‘Twas the week before Christmas
And all through the shop;
The dust was a flying
Making gifts non-stop;

The list was quite long
And the wood was piled high,
The tools were all sharpened
So the shavings would fly;

The snowmen were finished
All waiting in line,
A final buffing was needed
To make them all shine;

The pens were completed
Boxed up and gift wrapped,
Some pencils too
And some odd nic knacks;

Empty bowls, Empty bowls
Was the cry from the chief;
How could I finish
Oh my… Good Grief;

Centering the wood and turning it round
My trusty bowl gouge cut
With a sizzling sound;

Then what do I hear,
It’s a flapping, then a Pop,
And the lathe slowed down,
Till it came to a stop;

Just what I needed
A mechanical break,
And I tore off the covers
With a jolt and a jake;

I spied the confusion,
A big problem galore!
The belt has broken
It’s there on the floor!

As I pick up the belt,
What to do, what to do,
As I see it’s no job
For my trusty super glue;

Off to Wood Craft, Loews and Rockler
A belt to find,
But Christmas Eve is so near;

Home Depot has nothing and
Ace Hardware is closed;
As I drive slowly home,
A bleak picture does grow;

Digging through stuff
I should never have saved,
I spy an old belt
From my younger days;

It fits me no longer and
It is very well worn,
This old belt might work,
There’s nothing torn;

With a staple or two,
And a lot of duct tape;
This thing just might work
Fix me up, ship shape;

I slip the belt on
It takes lots of work;
Power it up and
It starts with a jerk;

Slowly at first and
Then ever faster;
A few light cuts,
And still no disaster;

Cutting through Maple,
Oak and some Holly;
This belt really works
I’m feeling quite jolly;

The wood pile shrinks,
As the shavings grows
The dust collector whines,
Keeping dust from my nose;

The turnings complete;
Empty bowl project finished;
The threat of disaster,
Completely diminished;

Another year gone,
This holiday season,
The gifts all completed,
And here is the reason;

We wood turners are all,
A very fun bunch,
We’ll turn from daybreak till, well after lunch,
We love it so much and get great satisfaction,
And we really enjoy all the group inter-action,

New tools we will share,
New friends you will meet,
New ideas you will learn,
Some old friends you will greet;

So if by chance a wood turner you see,
Get to know’em a little better,
A good friend they will be!

Thanks!

Jimmy,

That is great Word Turning!

I was just heading to our joint flat workers and round workers Holiday luncheon, and decided to bring it and offer it as a reading.

Thanks.
