On Youtube a number of videos show large turnings being made in Asian saw mills. The woods are sometimes orange to red in color. These turnings are 12" and much larger diameters with no hollowing. There doesn't seem to be any concern about issues relating to drying as the turnings age. They apply finish as the turnings are completed. Another recent video shows olive wood burls, same deal, massive sold turnings. What's the deal wiht these woods?

A few years back a local woodturner got the idea of money to be made importing Asian woods apparently from areas in or near the fighting in Vietnam. That didn't work out so well as the wood he found was embedded with shrapnel from the war.

Kinda reminds of suburban trees where I live, back yard trees with all manner of things nailed to them, bored into them etc over the years. I tend to avoid them completely, but wood from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines should be fine . There's a Viet turner on Facebook that turns the traditional large temple pieces, cant ell if they are green or not.
