When buffing out a bowl using the bowl balls what speed do you have the lathe running?

The balls don't rotate as fast as the bigger disks so I'm wondering what adjustments you make.

It depends on the bowl buff size. I have the 3" buffs and usually run them at around 200 - 2500 rpm. The logic is that they ar 3/8 the size of the wheels so should spin at 8/3 or 2 2/3 times as fast to get the same linear speed.
 
Thanks for the explanation, that's what I understood only I didn't have the math figured out.

So why the different speeds? What are the variables that indicate speed you buff at?

Beall recommends 1725rpm on the 8" wheels which means they are running at 3615 surface feet per minute. To get the same surface footage on a 3" ball you would have to run the lathe at 4600 rpm. If you want to calculate it yourself the formulas are:

SFM=.262 x dia. x RPM
RPM = (3.82 x SFM) / dia
 
I use the same speed.

I do as well......In my case, my home made buffing station is 1825rpm, and not variable. When I got my Beale outfit, I also purchased a Morse taper arbor unit for my lathe, but have never used it. I do not have frequent use for the small bowl buffs, but when I have used them, they all seem to work ok at the 1825rpm.
