Hi all,

I am new to woodturning, I have some woodworking experience and have build a bit of a following for my knife handles. I have been rehandling Japanese knives to pay for my worshop toys and expansion into wood turning. I have been reading and researching for a few months now.

Thanks for letting me in..
Ben

Welcome to the forum.

If you have not already done so, I suggest you visit a AAW local chapter.
Local chapter offer many woodturning opportunities.
There are two close to Boston

Also check out the AAW video library. It is a searchable set of videos on YouTube that have been evaluated by AAW volunteers for safe and effective practices.

Thank you for your suggestions, as a stay at home dad to small children, I have limited time during “normal hours”. I tend to get 3-5 hrs a week in the shop at night when everyone else is asleep...I tend to be self taught for most things, I prefer to learn from my mistakes when it is safe.

Here is an example of my recent knife handles.

Learning alone can work if you are interested in developing a unique artistic voice, but as far as just learning to use the tools is concerned doing it isolation is probably the main reason that many people lose interest. Watching a video is much better than just reading a book, but having a live mentor looking over your shoulder is immensely better than a video.

Welcome Ben. This forum has already been very helpful to me. Great bunch of knowledge here for sure. What helped me with my first attempt at a bowl was taking it to my first wood turning chapter meeting and someone showing me how to hold, aim and gouge in person. Even if you only get to go once, it's well worth it if you have questions on something. Most of the guys in the local chapter here are seasoned turners and very helpful. And I've only been once. Lol Looking forward to the next meeting.
