Boxwood

Does anyone have a good source for Boxwood?

I wish. Watching this space - I'll check with Gabriel's source.

I love the fine grain and strength of boxwood. Excellent for chasing threads. Some years ago some friends jumped through all the hoops and imported a bunch of boxwood from overseas. I was fortunate to get a few pieces.

The best substitutes I know of that grow in the US are dogwood (some can be white like boxwood, some have colors), and Privet (a horrible invasive hedge brought from the far east - it's taking over the country. I've declared a war against Privet and Bush Honeysuckle on my property. Privet is rarely large large enough diameter to be good for turning but I found a huge one and made some blanks - about dry enough to use now.

If you are on Facebook, look for Huw Crompton. He has a lot of Boxwood. He is in the UK. I have gotten at least 3 shipments from him. He is a game warden at a national forest where they manage Boxwood. I got some that was planted in the 17 hundreds. Always incredible old growth, the real deal Boxwood. Tell him I sent you.

How big is a boxwood that old?

Dunno if they stock it, but Gilmer Hardwoods in Portland, Oregon. They do stock wood from around the globe.
