What are the secrets (if any) to the succesful use of brushing lacquer on bowls & platters?

here's what i do
I apply it while on lathe, with lathe stopped brush n a sloppy coat (put paper underneath) turn the lathe on slow speed and burnish with blue shop towel.

Is your bowl mounted in a chuck while you do this?
Do you subsequently apply lacquer to the surface you can't, while mounted?
Any problems with matching the two lacquered surfaces to each other?

It is ussually still on the chuck when i do this soooo when finished turn off the tenon and just wipe a little on the bottom. not had any problems with them looking different.

And for the record, don't do this while it is on a vacuum chuck.

know a guy that did that had to replace his hose, sucked the laqcuer right through ithe bowl.

When going for a full-on deep, glossy lacquer finish I will sometimes do a couple coats of brush on to build the finish. Then wet sand level and spray a couple finish coats. A quart of brush on costs about the same as 12 oz. of rattle can spray, and seems to have a much higher solids content than the spray. Just a matter of $$ on a larger piece.

The best luck i have had with brush lacquer is mix it 50/50 with lacquer thiner and spray it. Wjth a cheap h/f minny spray gun.
