CBN Wheels on a high speed grinder.

Has anyone used CBN wheels on a high speed grinder? How did it work out.

I have an old 3500 rpm Detal 8” grinder, 23-880, with SG5 wheels exclusively for my turning tools, I’d like to switch to CBN wheel but don’t want to buy another grinder.

BTW, I also have THE Baldor 8” slow speed grinder which is set up for my flat work tools and other non ferris metal grinding. I could repurpose the Baldor for my turning tools and CBN wheels, but the Baldor apparently is not compatible with my Wolverine system set up specs. (surprise and disappointment)

All comments are welcome.

Dave Schwitzer, formally D-Way Tool owner and probably an early supplier of CBN wheels for lathe tool use, sharpened all the tools he sold using high speed 8" grinders. Some of his video's mention it. The only significant change is that it removes metal faster.

Yes, I used a HS 7" grinder with an 8" CBN for a lot of years - no problem sharpening. When I added a second CBN it was a little slow in starting up (both steel wheels) unless I gave it little spin (only a 1/2hp motor) - but it worked fine for sharpening. After some time I bought a Rikon 1hp for the CBN's and put my 7" grinder back in service with my Norton wheels for sharpening non-HSS and everything else.

Generally speaking, the only problem (apart from very/too fast material removal) is using CBN wheels on low quality grinders. Tool buoncing can be a real pain!

Dave Schweitzer had a 10 inch Jet high speed grinder in his shop, with a 60 grit wheel. It took off a lot of metal very quickly.

I don't use the Wolverine set up for tool sharpening. I have heard of some people using them with the 8 inch Baldor grinders. Can't remember how they did it. I think I remember one person who made an angled base for it rather than the standard flat piece of plywood or what ever under the base. Another was some one who had an extended vertical post on his system. You could cut off most of that under the wheel dust collection set up too. Might make it more difficult to sell to a metal shop if you ever want to do that. We just don't have hobby shop level grinder dust collection systems available, yet...
