I've been a fan of the Haddon Lumbermaker for years. Clamped to my Husky 3520 with a 36" bar, I have ripped 4x30s in soft maple. Then fixtured up, works just as you say as a chop saw.

Great idea!
You can rotate the log as you cut each side so that the cuts from each side are parallel to the bark giving the best grain pattern.
