charred wood

I think almost all finishes will work but put it on either by spraying or with a lint free cloth. I ruined one using paper towels. I have sprayed lacquer, wiped on Watco, and Minwax and who knows what else. I guess I've used just about any finish that I have used on bowls through the years. I often burn an edge or some other area so it gives me lots of experimenting time.
One of my favorites is to wipe black shoe polish over the burn area and then seal it with a coat of shellac. Then I use whatever my favorite finish is. The shoe polish gives it a nice clean look.
