Dennis,
As a new turner myself, when our local club hosted a Trent Bosch demo I was hesitant about attending. After listening and watching Trent turn I probably learned more in those few hours than I did in the previous 4 months that I had been turning by trial and error.

Hi Dennis,
I think you answered the question yourself! ;) The quickest way to get better is to learn from and watch someone better than yourself, then practice, practice, practice. Personally, I wouldn't care if he was making toothpicks, if Chris was coming near here I'd be there.

Chris Stott is good for beginners

We had Chris Stott for a five hour demo on May 15 at the Carolina Mountain Woodturners meeting. He spent the entire time turning boxes in the 2 to 3 inch range. My wife, who has been turning for just two weeks, learned enough to want to try to make several. We bought some appropiate blanks on the way home. Chris is a wonderful teacher and very funny comedian. His English brogue is a little hard to understand at times. So if you have any hearing difficulties, get close to the speaker.

He turned a complete box with ONLY A LARGE SKEW. He even did the rough turning of the 3" x 3" blank with that skew. I probably would have launched that missile within two seconds if I had tried that! There are pictures of his boxes in the gallery at www.carolinamountainwoodturners.org.

I believe that the newest newbie to the most experienced geezer would gain much from seeing Chris in person.

You should attend each and every demonstration you can get access to, no matter what your skill level. There is nobody alive than can't learn something new--even the most experienced "expert" out there. An turning is something that is best learned through example followed by practice. Demonstrations serve an important role as part of the former.

Besides, demos are also very inspriring.
