I had this gnarly chuck of wet madrone I wanted to salvage.

First I squared it up in the milling machine to try and avoid major checks.

Next a recess for an expanding collet was milled. Also, a ring was milled as a guide in trimming the waste with a chop saw.

Next picture shows the collet and blank ready to go to the lathe.

Then the blank rounded off and faced on the end. Not much left after the bad areas were trimmed.
