I have seen the commerical version of tools to deep bowl gouges. I have a book by Raffan that shows one made from wood. I have a metal shop plus my wood shop so I would like to build one. Has anyone done this and are there any pit falls? I am going to try to make a pictorial record if someone wants to see. I have some aluminum bars that should be perfect for the project. I have access to stainless steel rods (from a winery scrap yard) for the main gouge. Any comments?

As long as the material you're intending to use for creating a cutting edge is somewhere in the 60's range on the Rockwell Hardness C scale you should be able to create just about anything you have in mind. In my experience, SS is not particularly hard and doesn't hold a good cutting edge. Picking up some tool steel might provide a better result for the time you're going to invest in getting the job done.

Don't think stainless steel is at all suitable for turning tools. Any good edge if you can achieve one will break up.

Perhaps someone else has a source they can recommend for suitable steel. The exotic steels that some tools are made from today are a very big improvement over what we used to have.

I'm sorry. I am not making the cutters out of SS. I will make the handle of holder out of SS. They cutter can be bought. My daughter has suggested a holder design I want to try. If it works I'll post it. Is there anything in the design to be aware of. I found two pieces of 5/8" aluminum 20" long for the upper side. I, also, found all thread so I should be able to do some designing soon.

I guess i don't understand what you are trying to make then.

Steve I am confused also. It sort of sounds like he wants a captured bar hollowing system but I don't know.

Exactly. The capture part will be aluminum and the handle will be SS with a socket on the end to attach various lengths (depending on how deep). These will have a attachment point for cutters. I am hoping that aluminum is ok for the capture part. And again the people on this forum are great for helping without negativity.

Still not sure what you're hunting. But if it ain't here: http://www.laymar-crafts.co.uk/laymar_crafts-hints.htm you don't need it (almost). See the parts about Deep Boring Systems.

Correction to "you don't need it:" Google ["oland tool"] for more suggestions. Stiffness of the supports is key to any tool guidance. Longer reach requires fatter shanks holding the cutter to reduce chatter. Deepest I've gone with a 1/8" HSS bit in a 1/2" solid shank is about 9 inches. As a general rule of thumb, for equivalent stiffness, aluminum needs to be about 1.5 x the thickness of solid steel.

Thanks for the web site. It is just what I'm Looking for. The AL was to be used for the trap but it looks like it would be too small. I am rethinking and will probably go with the 1" square tubing. I have plenty. I will redesign the cutter holder after making the trap. Thanks again.
