Difference in above ground and below ground wood....?

Spent the past week at the beach. For some unknown reason for the first time in many years I didn't take a decent saw.

I had to go to Walmart and buy a small limb cutting saw to salvage some of the winter's storm falls below the bluffs. Cutting entirely by hand with an 18" blade gave me the impression the below ground roots were denser than the above ground portions of the trees. For sure the below ground parts had more twist and figure. There were a couple large madrones I would have liked to get sections of, but not possible with that little saw.

Any experience with this?

BTW: I noticed we're only a couple miles as the crow flies from the world headquarters of D-Way tools.

Once while on a field trip to a sand barrens the leader pointed out oak trees that looked like they were youngsters. He said they actually were very old but never grew large because of disturbances (deer he thought). Even though it's illegal kids get in and tear it up with dirt bikes. Actually they're providing the disturbance. So in this case the roots were larger than the tree itself.
