Greetings all

I have been so busy with other things I keep forgetting to post this, and only think about it when I am back up in the shop again. So, while the glue is drying...

I am going to be at the Harrisburg PA Woodcraft tomorrow from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM doing a demo. I am not exactly sure what I am going to be doing yet, as I am allowed to do whatever I want. I guess I had better make up my mind soon, eh?

Anyway, if anyone here reading this is in the area, and you have the time and inclination, stop by and say hello. I will be the large handsome fellow with the well developed turning muscle standing by the lathe.

I would love to stop by for moral support as well as learning some new stuff, but it s about 1200 miles from here and my gas tank is low. Actually I just got back from a 3000 mile road trip and the only place I want to sit right now is maybe at the keyboard, and I am about to go to the shop instead. Good luck on the demo, I am sure you will do well.

I teach high school for a living so you would think doing demos would be second nature for me but I find them to be much more challenging than just another day in class. Our closest Woodcraft is about 4 hours away so demo ops there are rare, but I do several demos per year at our local AAW chapter and some of the others that are closer than Woodcraft.

Podnuh, you could just mosey down to Fort Worth, Texas to do a demo at the Woodcraft here and our turning club is just a couple miles down the road. There are some good trees on the golf course where the club meets, so you could just bring your chain saw along and do a tree to bowl demo like you do on your video.:D

Thanks for the invitations guys. One of these days I think I will be getting out of the Northeast again, but not for a while. Why, I even went to Indiana once! :D I will tell you though, if I have to fly, I will have trouble with Homeland Security for lethal weapons (a.k.a. turning tools) and the airline for 200 lbs of carryon bags full of wood and chucks and such!

Woodwish, demos are always an adventure. I had a couple watch me for the full four hours yesterday, the lady asking lots of intelligent questions, etc. I think she is going to be the turner of the two. Partway through, I was showing how to use a scraper on the inside of a deep natural edged bowl, and I (gasp!) had a catch. She started laughing and told me how happy she was to see that happen. She was getting worried because everything had gone so smoothly to that point and she knew it would never be that way for her. Well, never is a long time, and I proved it would be even longer for me anyway. I got to show the people watching how to fix mistakes, and no bad words were said.

Paul, there is a chance I may be down towards Cincinnatti for that symposium in October, but it is still in the planning stages.

Bill, I definitely want to get down to see you Texicans one of these days.

Side note: when I hit the reply button this morning I got a window that said I was not allowed to post. I thought, "Oh no, they have caught up to me on the plagiarism thread!" Then I realized, I am on my new machine <stealth gloat inserted here> My daughter needs a computer for college, and we wanted a laptop to take to shows for printing receipts out and other things, so I am now portable - well, as portable as I will ever get.

I hope that you make it to the Symposium west of Cincinnatti in October. I'm already signed up and looking forward to it. I was there in 2003 and had a great time - until I tripped over the protruding leg of a chair in the dining room and fell, and fell, and fell, and landed on top of a dining table. I fell for so long that the table occupants had enough time to vacate the table, thank goodness. They seemed to forgive me. :D :D

How did the demo go?

I did a demo one evening last week for a club I belong to and feel that I tried to put 10 pounds into a 5 pound bag. The Golden Ratio and the Fibonacci numbers may have snowed a few of them, too. One friend wrote me an e-mail and made some kind remarks. But I really think what he appreciated most was that I quit on time. :D :D

It went pretty well for me. There was a decent crowd there, and although I only sold one DVD, I sold both of the demo bowls, to be delivered once they are finished, so it turned into a profitable afternoon as well as a fun one. I might get some teaching out of it too, but it is too early to tell.

I'm still waiting to hear on the symposium.

I'm brand spanking new at turning and on the advice of some Woodnet forum members I purchased your DVD. I've really enjoyed it and learned tons from it. :) I'm looking forward to making my own bowl blanks and turning green wood this summer.

I also just finished watching Bill's DVD- and it was extremely educational and entertaining.

I wish there had been more sanding, though... ;)


Seriously- it was really a fun watch, and inspires me to try a few new techniques. Kudos, Bill! :)
