There will be two opportunities for box makers to display their creations at the 2008 AAW Symposium in Richmond.

The big news is that the AAW is setting aside a section specifically devoted to boxes in the main Instant Gallery. The Instant Gallery will be on display for the entire Symposium, so box makers should plan to place their best work there. All box makers should strive to make this Instant Gallery the largest display of turned boxes ever seen.

On Friday evening there will be a Box Turning Special Interest Night session. During this session there will be a turned box exhibition for that evening only where those choosing to participate may exhibit up to two boxes. In conjunction with the Special Interest Night session, Mr. Richard Raffan, Dr. Kip Christensen, Mr. Mark St. Leger, Mr. Benoit Averly and a mystery guest will be available for a “Question and Answer†session after a review of the boxes on display. The Box Turning Special Interest Night session will be hosted by Ed Moore and Mike Stafford.

With the large number of demonstrations devoted to turning boxes and two opportunities to view turned boxes, this could prove to be the “Symposium of the Boxes.†I hope everyone interested in boxes will participate in the Instant Gallery section dedicated to boxes and also in the Special Interest Night Box Exhibition.

Hope to see you and your boxes in Richmond!!!

Ed, I keep trying to do just that but when I see a little piece of wood I immediately think box. And since I only have little pieces of wood I think about boxes a lot....:p:D

Hey Mike, can anyone contribute to the Instant Gallery? If so what is the dead line? I don't believe I'll be able to attend the symposium but may like to contribute a box.

Tom the Instant Gallery is a display of work just during the Symposium. It is not a traveling exhibition or an auction. I don't know of a mechanism whereby you can just send an object for inclusion into the Instant Gallery. That goes for SIN Box Exhibition as well. Ed and I are in no position to receive and return boxes except during the SIN itself. We are expecting exhibitors to deliver and pick up their boxes at the end of the SIN as the room will be used for demonstrations the next morning.

Having said all that, this is my first AAW Symposium and there may be no rules against such a thing. I just don't know the answer. I will speak to someone who might be able to provide an answer.

Dear Hair,
I hope that it works out for you to make Richmond.

You used the word "contribute" There are two contribution avenues available. You may contribute pieces to the EOG auction. You may also contribute toys to the return to community. Members do contribute to these efforts even when they cannot attend. They usually ask a member who is going to bring them. Members can arrange to ship a contribution. I can supply an address of a local AAW member who would receive and deliver the items to the symposium.
Many local chapters will collect a large number of toys (many contributed by members who cannot attend the symposium) It has sort of become a mini competition with chapters trying to bring the most toys and the Kids win!

Regarding the Instant gallery. The essence of the instant gallery if for attendees to share their work with other attendees. Pieces must be checked into and out of the Instant galley in person and is limited to registered attendees. "This wonderful tradition of past symposiums is open to all attendees. Please bring up to three of your own turned creations to share with others. Limited vertical wall display space will once again be provided, so don't hesitate to bring your wall-mounted turnings. The gallery will be open to the public and the community, as well as to symposium participants - displaying more than 600 pieces."

happy turning,
Al

Al and Mike, I appreciate your help in this. I can contact Ed and maybe set something up. I seriously doubt that I will be able to attend the Symposium, but will do my best to send something.

Tom,

Consider coming just for a day. You are about 3 hours away.
Get a few woodturning friends who can't attend the whole symposium and car pool.

The Instant Gallery and trade show are open to the public.
Two AAW exhibitions, the Spheres and Turned for Use, are open to the public.

The resident artist will be in the Instant Gallery.
There are usually quite a few folks demonstrating tools and equipment in the trade show.

A one day registration is available if you want to attend demo sessions, but
you can see a whole lot in the trade show and instant gallery without registering for the sympsoium.

Hope to see you in Richmond,
-Al
