Poser:

I was watching one of the Jimmy Clewes videos (or was it one of Mike Darlowe's???) and saw a good explanation of the amount of shrinkage that could be expected in each of 3 directions. There was an implication that this information was available for all to see.

I'm guessing that this is pretty specific and technical information that can indeed be located once one knows the right words to use in a search. Anybody got those words or links in their collection of stuff?

I'm also guessing that those numbers are going to be useful in explaining things like the tendency of Apple to check and crack wildly. And the same with several other woods, while still others are less prone to dramatic crackage.

Thoughts and links, anyone???? TIA.

Now that I look at the times of the posts, I suppose that was speedy information. Truth is, I had just dried my hands after digging potatoes, pulling carrots and trimming/brining broccoli for dinner, and thought I'd take my iced-tea break in front of the tube. Afficionados will recognize the information as the same as is contained in R Bruce Hoadley's Understanding Wood , which is no coincidence, he having been employed at FPL.

Note that the term average really guarantees little specific, and the piece will often have a mix of grain directions to contend with if it's one of the pretty ones. The shape/thickness of the piece are important factors as well. Since all shrinkage, as with politics, is local, who has support of or is under the single-sided influence of whom determines whether the lean will be right or left.
