I had been mulling ideas to make an indexing jig for my lathe because I had an open segment jig on order.
Lo and behold Mike Peace shows up on my You Tube recommends on that same subject and his jig was the ultimate in simplicity. I got down in my shop, found a few parts and put it together in under an hour. Instead of a flat aluminum bar he showed in his video I had a squarish rod of hdpe that was a cutting stick from a guillotine cutter in a past life, and drilled a tight hole in it and pushed a broken drill bit shaft that happened to fit perfectly into it. I alread had a threaded handle for the clamp so that only took cutting a slot in the two by four to slip it into.
One thing to note is the dvr has the bearings and shaft shoulders recessed into the head on both ends and the plastic index wheel I got from Iron Fire fit but is pulled tightly against the body so it will not spin freely. Im not sure a steel wheel would work. You cant even mount anything on the handwheel end. I suspect an extension would have to be used to make the steel work.

I found a solution to the index wheel fit on the dvr. I dug out a plastic box made from about .060” plastic and cut a 1 1/4” hole in a flat area with a forstner bit then cut a quarter inch around it with the scrollsaw. I glued it onto the index wheel backside with contact cement and got just the clearance needed to spin freely for when I need to face sand the rings.
