Elipse P100 Dust Mask

I need to replace my current dust mask, not working well. A local turner told me he had tried the Elipse P100 dust mask and it worked well with his glasses. Anyone out there have experience with it? In the video at Highland, they show that it fits under a face shield, but don't show him turning. I'm wondering, with the straight-out-front exhale valve, does the face shield steam up?

PS: I have a powered respirator, just looking for a new dust mask.

I haven't tried the Elipse, but I use the 3M 7500 with the particulate filters because the vent is at the bottom of the respirator, rather than shooting strait from the middle. That said, I turn in the great outdoors and even the 3M 7500 will fog up my face shield.

A story about respirators with a moral at the end: I've used this design for about 15 years and was just talking with one of my best woodworking buddies. He hates the 7500 because it doesn't fit his face right, and his preferred brand (hardware store cheapo) has driven me nuts when I tried one years ago. So...it's also important to try a respirator for fit. The 7500 comes in S, M, and L...not sure about others.

That's the sad part about my current mask not working. It is so comfortable on my face, and the straps don't bug me at all (unlike many other masks). But the exhale valve (under the chin) just doesn't do the job! Darned near get dizzy after a few minutes of turning. I've check the valve, it works, just not well enough. The 3M 7500 looks like it has the valve at the tip or the topo of the tip of the nose, I can totally see where that might be a problem. The Elipse valve is in a similar location.

Hi Jamie,

The 7500 valve is in the middle of the mask, but vents at the bottom. The opening is below the 3M logo in the pictures, so it exhales down and probably as low as a mask could. 3M has very light one-way seals, and I don't notice a problem exhaling. I take the entire mask, including seals, apart regularly to clean.
 
I've been using the P100 for 6 months, I love it! I purchased several replacement filters. I do have a PAPR system but I find unless I am doing a ton of finish work it is easier to slip the P100 on. I wear it with safety glasses and a face shield, I recommend it to all of my students a JC Campell.
 
I have been using the P100 for almost a year now. I have always hated wearing a mask because of my glasses. Either the straps were uncomfortable, moved my glasses, or caused them to fog up. The P100 is the first mask I don't mind wearing. I would highly recommend the P100.
 
Here is a link to information on the 3M site about the 7500 Respirator.. The face seal is made of a very soft and comfortable silicone material, which is what the face seal on my CPAP mask uses and what is used for oxygen masks in hospitals. I noticed that the Elipse mask uses a thermoplastic face seal which is what the low end 3M series 6000 respirators use.

Thanks, Bill. Their write-up Indicates the exhaust is directed downward.
 
I like my P100. It will work under a Bionic shield, just. No fogging problem for me.
Comfortable enough to wear for an hour or so without a lot of moisture buildup inside.

I saw on the 3M site that there were several different filter cartridges rated P100 efficiency that worked with their half-mask respirators. From the descriptions I'm not sure which one would be preferred for woodturning. Do you recall which one you use? Maybe it isn't that important.
 
Got the Elipse about month ago and have had no problems with wearing glasses or face shield fogging up. Got it from leevalley (24.95) when they had free shipping for purchases over $40. Add two sets of replacement filters (9.95ea ) to get ovrer 40. Found it much better than the 3m I had.

I am using bought mine from Highland Woodworking. http://www.highlandwoodworking.com/elipse-p100-dust-mask.aspx and buy the replacement filters from them (bottom of page). I was not aware of different types of filters, other than added nuisance odor.

Oh I was confused. I thought that you had the 3M 7500 half-face respirator. The 3M respirators have about ten different fiter cartridges. Some have a HEPA rating (P100 or N100) and others are rated P95 or N95. I see that Zach has the 3M 7500.
 
I purchased the Elipse P100 a couple of months ago. I used to use a Dust-Be-Gone mask. I liked the Dust-Be-Gone........found that it was comfortable enough that I would wear it. Saw the Elipse and thought I would try it. It supposedly filters down to .5 micron. I find it comfortable enough that I am wearing it when ever I am producing dust. I use it while wearing a face shield and have found no problems. I like it a lot and find I do not mind wearing it. The sinus system thinks it is pretty good.

Jamie--I got an Ellipse a couple of months back after it showed in my searches on Amazon. I wanted something other to use than the Trend and it fills the bill. Fits nicely under my faceguard, no steaming--works better for me than the 3M I tried too. Haven't needed to change the filters yet but did look at them after some long usage, they catch lots of "stuff".
Thinking I may buy another as a sort of backup or to share.
