We here at Lancaster Area Woodturners enjoyed a return visit to our weekly coffee hour with AAW member number 0001, David Ellsworth, who led an excellent discussion on the art of developing a natural-edge bowl from winter-felled chunks of wood. David explains how he finds his way into the form by shifting the tail center as he works, in response to what the wood reveals. Here's the link -

FYI, Woodturners Coffee Hour is free and open to all woodturners, just message me to join our email list.

Ooohh.. if you talk to David again tell him thanks - That's gonna be real interesting (I haven't watched it yet) but Ive been enjoying doing natural edge bowls (mostly apple and cherry) so definitely hope to learn something from this one. :)

I watched David give a hollowing presentation for our club a few years back and was really inspired. He was using wet wood and streaming a never-ending ribbon of wood into the front rows. Very impressive! It convinced me to purchase one of his gouges and sharpening rigs. My Ellsworth gouge continues to be one of my favorite tools!

John, what is the day and time for Coffee Hour?
Love the Lancaster area! Was there for several days in 2019.

Every Thursday at 10 am, for 57 Thursdays now without a single miss. Great fun!
Thanks for posting the link to this one! I would like to join you guys, but 10am where you are is probably like 5 am Maui time, I would need more than coffee! Aloha

Thanks for sharing that experience, David really has a wonderful way of explaining things, and encouraging you to go out and try a concept. I happen to love the approach of being given a concept, or situation, with the beginnings of an idea and being left to do the "last mile" of exploration myself, rather than being given a step by step instruction, as this approach is much more freeing. Very enjoyable listen.

Thanks for posting the video. The best, most productive turning experience I have ever had was the week I got to spend with David Ellsworth at Arrowmont.

David Ellsworth is a wonderful teacher. I've learned a great deal from the videos I've found, such as this one, and his book. I would love to attend one of his workshops, I'm sure he's a great person to deal with. His approach to how to learn to read the wood, i.e. just do it and be willing to make mistakes, is some of the best advice there is.
