So I had a round 4 inch diameter 6 inch long round blank of really green, really wet wood. I turned it round last week and set it in some chips. Today I pulled it out and decided to turn two small cups from it. I had it mounted on the face plate so I could turn one cup on the tail stock end, part it off and make the second cup with what was left. After taking more time than I wanted to turn the first cup I started an extremely lazy sanding job and decided to part off. But right before I got to the point of no return during parting I stopped and decided to just turn a stem and base...then call it a day. Turned the stem, sanded, stained. Done.
Well....almost.
When I started to part off near the face plate I hit the tips of the screws. So I move over a bit and went for it again. Still a little too close to the tips. Move over a tiny bit more, hear no tips, and go for it. But as I was inching over to miss the screw tips I didn't realize how far over I had gone and how thin I had made the base. Too late at this point so as I get about halfway to center the thin little disc that was supposed to be the base snapped off and flew up the stem, still intact and round. Voila, accidental captive ring...well, disc, really.
I "cleaned up" what was left and made that the base, ugly as it is. With this piece it was more about the surprise ring than making it look pretty.
I had to snap a pic before the ring dries up and cracks apart, which I hope it doesn't. I may hit it with a little CA to prevent that if I get a chance.

I've had one or two of those occur, but none that were intentional, survived, or were worth trying to save. I've not attempted one purposely yet.....:D
