Fixing those pesky checks in the end of a log?

My fix is to chainsaw off the end of the log.
The best idea is to turn something out of them before they get a chance to check, but never cut a whole tree into turning blanks. If you can't get to them soon enough you can always cut the checked ends off like Richard said.
