I have burls in several places on my property, this is one section behind my house that has several nice maples. I have around 60 trees down in this section, 98% pine, due to the hurricane a few weeks ago. I check these trees every year to see if they are dying and thought with this many trees down from the hurricane one of the burl trees had to fall.
I was able to check on them yesterday and not one of them had fell but 20 foot above them 60 trees are on the ground!! I’m not one to cut a tree just to make bowls but these are testing my patience 😂.
I’ll continue to watch them and one day they will make some nice bowls and hollow forms…but not today.

You are lucky. I have some woods maybe 2-3 acres and have looked and maybe see one burl 30-40 feet off the ground. Mostly shagbark hickory, poplar, ash with some walnut and cherry. The only trees that seem to fall are poplar and ash.

I am! But on the subject of burls, I don't have any on my 5 acres. Further, I asked a tree service and they said they never get burls. I have no idea why there aren't any burls here.

I would be making plans for that tree if it was mine. When you do drop it I'd suggest getting a small track hoe and digging out around the stump so it can be removed. I think you will find burl figure going down into the root ball. Sounds like you have a lot of clean up to do in the meantime. Loosing trees from the weather is horrible and an incredible amount of work.

Planning on digging the stump if I ever take it down.

That's odd. I've seen a bunch on our property, most fairly small. I've been watching one near the horse pasture almost double in size in 20 years, maybe 18" diameter now. I often see big burls in the area when driving around but never stopped to ask about them.

Before I got the sawmill I used to buy wood from a guy with a big hydraulic mill, maybe an hour east of here. He said he got burls all the time - just threw them in the corner and let people come and take them.
