Hi everyone, I just joined and I am looking forward to learning a lot. I have a Laguna Revo 1524 variable speed wood lathe purchased back in December. I have had all kinds of trouble with it having bad bearings and noises coming out of the headstock, but I can post about that in another thread later.
I can turn entry-level spindle work and have an 8-hour intro to spindle and bowl turning class scheduled in September at my local woodcraft store.
I have not joined any clubs yet because of Covid-19 shutting all the in-person meetings down, but maybe things will start to open up a little now and I can eventually join a club.
I originally was given my dad's 1976 1411 Rockwell wood lathe ( will add pic) to start with and quickly found that I enjoyed turning and so I bought the Revo. My wife also found that she likes to turn so sometimes we have both lathes going at once ( she uses the scraper- her favorite tool and a 1/4 inch detail gouge my dad gave us).
My dad gave me a complete set of Buck Brothers wood lathe tools to start out (made in the USA) I later found out that they are made of carbon steel and need to be sharpened often. It gave me an excellent chance to get started. I have since bought some tools from Alan Lacer's online store and he sharpened them for me before shipping.
I have access to lots of wood and just need to learn more about turning. After watching some YouTube videos I made some sycamore and walnut bowl blanks, but don't know how to get started (hence the class I am taking next month at woodcraft). I took a turning class in high school shop, but that was forty years ago.
I am going to attach a picture of my lathes, bowl blanks, and some of my entry-level turning, such as Christmas trees, light pulls, and spurtles, plus some shop-made jigs using the lathe. But I have to take them first so will attach them later.
I have ordered a 1" and a 1/2" Carter and Son skew.
