I'm interested in getting a copy of this article. My magazine file does not go that far back. Where would I find a resource to this article ??

Interesting technique. I wonder how easy it is to control the tool? I could imagine the possibility of some big catches.
I played around with using a ground hole saw for 1” balls that are hard to turn with a bowl gouge.
I never got any catches and it’s easy control if you have a handle on the hole saw.

i could never come close to matching the speed or surface quality I get with a gouge.
small balls I just turn with a spindle gouge
larger ones with a bowl gouge.

I played with the hole saw a d even custom ground a.pipe. I was never happy with the finish and finally turned enough spheres to prefer the spindle gouge. They are t perfect but customers dont care. For anything near 2" and larger I finish the sphere between cup centered to get it perfectly round.

I have just made and tried the tool for a round bottom bowl and it did a good job of making the hemisphere perfect. The tool i used was made from a 2" hole saw. I was lucky to have lots of old used hole saws in my junk pile.

What speed are you running your lathe at?
