I debated with myself for quite a while, and decided that excellence needs to be acknowledged, even if the honoree blushes.

In the December issue of American Woodturner, John Lucas has an article, "Turning Captured Rings." This is probably the clearest, most complete, and best expressed instructional article I've ever read in our journal. As an example, check out photo #2, where you will see the ring I get on the left and the much superior ring that John explains how to achieve on the right. How did he know??? I've been at this a while, but I learned a ton from this article, and may now be able to get the results I've not previously achieved. Included as a bonus is how I might easily make some tools to get the job done.

Very, very well done, John. Thank you!

thanks Dean. Josh asked me to write an article on captured rings and I got carried away. I needed to make a new tool anyway so included that and I convinced him to let me to the tip on interlocking rings. Josh did a good job as usual with some minor editing.

John is one of the best instructors in video or online.

When students ask me about online or YouTube, my earlier instinct has been to cringe. Until John began posting his exceptional tutorial videos. Now his videos are the first place I guide my students. He is not only a very good Woodturner, who explains what he is doing in a language that is understood by woodturners just starting their journey, but his background in photography makes his camera positions spot on for showing exactly what the viewer needs to see.

Nice job John!

A few dozen of us are fortunate enough to benefit from John’s expertise, advice, and wisdom monthly as a member of Cumberland Woodturners. Pretty nice to regularly rub elbows with an expert and well regarded woodturning celebrity :)

Ron. I am in such good company with that group. It's nice to be surrounded by fellow turners who give so much.

Have been following John since he moderated a woodturning forum for Wood. His advise is always spot on and his tool making meets all requirements to get the job done effectively. Great job on the article.
