I am concidering turning thin lamp shades, but I don't know how to hold it in the chuck with the holes in both ends. What orientation should the grain be.

I have done several. I turned an ultra thin bowl in a cone shape holding it in a oneway chuck at the top end. No moves. I turned a bead at the top, about 1/2" wide, 1/4" thick, for the supports that go down to the harp. I cut the supports out of a wal-mart lamp.
I slowly dried it after soaking it in dish washing detergent and water over night.
