This one is in the gallery at present, So I thought I might offer a few comments about it. This technique of random coves horizontal or at 90' to the straight grain, is very effective in completely changing a chunk of straight grain wood. OK there's a fair bit of sanding , but if you keep the coves wide so the fingers can get in for sanding you will find its not so hard. Along with the random style there's not much discipline required as any shape is the right one :) Later on if you play with the light it can very the effect a lot as well. As difficult and tedious as it looks its hard to get away from the effect it produces .

That's one of the most interesting and nice surface embellishments I've seen. Achieving a look of randomness is really hard, most humans are driven to see and create patterns and order. I'd love to see some in-process pictures to see how you approach it.

Its really quite easy. I just run a few vague pencil lines around the piece. The final layout occurs as you develop the cove. The major point is not to over think it, anything you do along these lines on a similar blank will turn be just fine, and as you do it for the second and third time you will realize its random and anything goes.
I have made quite few of these, the only precsion is finish part from that anything goes
