I turned these a little while back set them to dry and they changed shape. They are ugly and cute at the same time. Sort of a lesson in wood movement too.

Elm does warp a bit as it dries. 
They still look nice as a decorative item.
I love the figure in elm. Something that really surprised me is how much oil will darken elm. I used walnut oil which is probably the lightest oil on an elm bowl and it turned it as dark as black walnut.

I processed a load of Elm wood a year or two ago and some of the pieces I have
turned also had a fair amount of wood warping on the bigger bowls. I started turning
them several times during the drying process to keep up with the wood warping if I wanted
a perfectly round item. Some people like the looks of a warped bowl, kind of adds an aged
look to the piece.

All the sw museum pieces are broken and pieced together, not for sale, then you have the the replica for sale which are perfect......it is amazing how much of nature that is perfect, but the aged original is what draws me.
I'll tell people they belonged to my great great great grandfather in siberia and he ate his gruel from them
I had a couple of larger sycamore bowls warp a while back. I was disappointed in them as they were to be gifted back to whom I got the tree. When she saw them, she was absolutely in love and amazed as to how I "turned" the unusual shape! You have to be really talented to turn an oval I guess!!
