Looking for Help

I would like to see a list of past Woodturning Symposia and the cities in which they were held. There once was a list but I can no longer find it. Can anyone provide direction?
Thank you
Angelo
Hi Angelo!
Still doing magic!

I don’t think the history list got moved from the old website - too bad.
If you aren’t in a hurry I think I have most of the old ones on my PC.
Just have the IPAD now.

Look back tomorrow or Tuesday. Have to mow the grass tomorrow

It was
Grass? What’s that? Still shoveling snow!
it was 34 Sunday morning…. Could have snowed here then.
Be in the 80s later this week

Congrats on the TOTW!

I have the symposium sites from Greenville on. This is when the symposium began using convention centers.
Before that the used university facilities. I missed those and do not have a list. Greenville 1996 was the first I attended.
2020 and 2021 it was cancelled.

In 1990 didn't they build a totem pole with pieces made by the local chapters? I didn't go to that one but I did help with the MWA entry for the pole. Our president Mary Redig (now Lacer) delivered the entry, and I have often wondered if the pole still stands.

I have a friend who went to one of the first ones at UC Davis. He told a story about David Ellsworth putting a bowl blank through a wall. Forgot to check the speed before he turned on the lathe..... No idea which year that was.

Yes, it was definitely there in 1990. Not sure if it was up in '89, but I believe it was put up for the '90 symposium. I also turned a piece for the Bucks Woodturners entry.

I don't remember what year they were, but there were also symposiums in Purchase, NY and Provo, Ut.
Hi, Bob. Weren't we both on the NJ committee helping with the Purchase symposium? I remember going to SUNY Purchase at least once for organizational meetings. I think it was '93 or '94. Unfortunately, I couldn't attend as I had a previously schedule show in Rhinebeck.

YES! I was present when they stacked the totem pole. The NJ turners didn't make one, but the chapter that met at the Manhattan YWCA did. However, it was thin walled, and deemed too fragile to put on the totem pole. That chapter shut down some time ago. I helped turn the piece, a big apple.
I remember reading some time ago that the totem pole was deteriorating, so was restored. I have no idea if it's still up now, 30 years later

Hi, Tom. Yes, we went up (I think) once or twice for planning meetings. I remember that I couldn't stay for the Sunday session, but I don't remember what I had to do that Sunday. I think Purchase may have been the last symposium I attended. Right after that, I took over the business from my dad, and my free time dwindled greatly.
Hey- I see you're a video star now!

Ur tee shirt reads 1993 for Purchase
Far as I know the totem pole with bird houses was still there. Most of the bird houses were in pretty poor shape. I’ll plan to stop by on my next trip north to see

Good observation, Angelo. I didn't notice that because of all the wrinkles! ;)

You're talking about the shirt, I presume? After reading this thread I'm wondering if we need to start a Geezer forum to complement the Getting Started forum.

When the AAW main website was "upgraded" a few years ago, a huge amount of very useful stuff was no longer there. Whoever was in charge of designing the new website apparently had no idea what was or wasn't important. As a moderator, I used a number of tools on the main website several times a day for things like verifying information for new forum members, helping members find AAW members close to them, finding mentors, helping forum members find a turning club, helping new members find online video links on the AAW main website, etc.

First project of the Geezer forum is to turn a cane. That way you can sit on your front porch and shake it yelling 'git off my lawn!'

I'll see myself out....

FWIW, the Arrowmont totem poles are still there, albeit rather weathered. Poor photo but how they look now. I was there last month for a Derek Weidman class.
