Logic suggests no, but, is it possible/prudent to use a #1MT in a #2MT spindle or tail stock quill. I wish to purchase a live center that has a 3/4" X 10TPI to fit items purchased from Rubber Chucky.com, specifically, the holder for a pepper mill top. I can find this with a #1MT from PSI and other places but I cannot find a unit with a #2MT. If I can't/shouldn't use a #1MT, does anyone know of a supplier for a #2MT unit. I have searched the AAW forums on this but no success. Thanks

No you can't use a MT1 in an MT2

But you can use an MT1 to MT2 adapter (CraftSupplies USA, PennState Industires, etc)

Better yet, is you can get a live center with a 3/4-10, use either the PowerMatic live center or the One-Way (both are available from a number of sources, Craft-Supplies USA, Packard, etc)

The original concept was to have a constant taper for all seven sizes of Morse tapers, but it did not turn out that way. The original idea was to have a taper of 5/8" per foot, but it actually varies all over the place. Brown & Sharp tapers are supposed to be 1/2" per foot and all of the sizes are quite close to that, but still not exact. Jacobs tapers have funny size numbers that do not seem to correlate to anything intuitive. Jarno tapers follow an exact rule, but it is based on ratios, so without a table to give at least one dimension, you still do not know everything that you need to know. NMTB tapers used on CNC milling machines use a precisely defined angle, but it is a very steep angle and unsuitable for woodturning because of its large diameter and short length (taper is 3.5 inches per foot).

Rubber Chucky ???

Being very skeptical and critical by nature I was amused when I read your question regarding Rubber Chucky products. I went to their website, WOW!, what a pleasant surprise to find some well thought out and very useful products offered:D. Highly recommend all woodturners take a look, neat tools for the woodturner.

More specifically to answer your question, I believe they offer a #2 Morse taper adapter at a very reasonable price, which will allow you to use your chucks on most any lathe,

Good luck with your Pepper Mills, I enjoy making them for gifts.

Little off the subject.

I have been wondering if there is such a thing as a M1 to M2 taper adapter. Meaning, to use a mini lathe with an M1 taper and adapt it to use attachments that are M2? I have not found anything online and I think I have extensively searched. I wanted to buy an inexpensive mini-lathe for a second lathe but it has an M1 taper. All my tools, of course are M2 taper.

Is this possible or is it not recommended? :confused::eek:

I don't think I've seen one. If there was one you accessories would stick out way too far to be useful. They do go the other way. I'll sell you a mini lathe with #1 morse tapers and a lot of accessories with it. :)

Clint and all,

First let me introduce myself. I am the owner of Rubber Chucky Products.
I do not wish to be accused by anyone of "advertising" here so please bear with me on this post as I just wish to clarify some things.

Rubber Chucky's may be used with a live center with a removable cone and a 3/4-10 threaded center, a scroll chuck or with the optional MT2 adapter. It is clearly stated on my website that you must have a live center with a removable cone to fully utilize my products. Most live centers - specifically, the Powermatic, Jet (not the mini's), Oneway and other of the better lathes come with said live center.

Keith did contact me and I told him that he would need said live center. The MT2 adapter that I sell is only for use in the spindle as it wouldn't turn in the tailstock. However, I may be selling live centers in the near future.

Clint, thanks for your kind words about Rubber Chucky. To explain the name, the products are really about work holding - or "chucking up" a workpiece and they are made of rubber. Thus the name Rubber Chucky.
