I got to the point I could start gluing segments today. 18 segments a layer, sassafrass as the background wood, black walnut and yellowheart for the feature pattern. More later.

If you define magic as patience and watching the details, yeah. Start small and easy, every time you do one it gets easier.
Every time you do one it also gets bigger.
And today I finished it. 7 3/4” tall, 12” wide, 1/2” wall. Mounted the solid top ring, turned the inside, then the outside, sanded and sprayed, reversed it and finished the bottom and sprayed varnish.

Absolutely gorgeous. Can't wait until I'm at that level, which is probably many years (and catches!) away.
Actually the hardest part was planning the cuts out. Once I got to the point of cutting it was a matter of following the plans cutting and gluing. The turning wasnt to bad either with a bowl gouge that had an irish grind to it. Since the turning was all side grain except the base it cleaned up pretty easy.
Gary, do use a jig to cut segments. After 4 years making segmented bowls with test cuts I discovered the wedgie sled (http://www.segeasy.com) and that made life a lot easier. I plan to do an open segment piece soon and I was very interested in your story. Cheers.
